The Wiradjuri nation has been deeply rooted in the Orange region and its surrounding districts for over 50,000 years. On an Indigenous Cultural Adventure, tour guests will be encouraged to explore the rich and vibrant culture of the Wiradjuri nation, while visiting ceremonial sites and other sites of cultural significance in the region. For instance you’ll be taken off the beaten-path to see the site of Yuranigh’s burial site. Yuranigh was the renowned guide for Sir Thomas Mitchell, who explored and surveyed the Orange region in 1851. The site features a cluster of carved trees to signify the burial ground of a very important person. From there you’ll visit Gaanha-bula – Mount Canobolas. Once the site of a traditional Bora (or Ceremonial) ground for male initiation ceremonies, this is a place held in great reverence by the local Indigenous people – with some of the stories about Old Man Canobolas and Young Man Canobolas having been handed down from generation to generation. A shorter bush tucker experience is also available.
Your tour guide will be Gerald Power. A Juru man from Bowen in Queensland, Gerald Power has moved around a lot, however for the past 38 years he has called Orange home. With the blessing of the local Wiradjuri elders, Gerald launched his own Tour business in 2016 built off his passion to share his culture with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Not only does Gerald conduct regular cultural tours around the Orange Region, he also runs his bush tucker catering business which enables him to combine the two into a unique Indigenous experience for locals and visitors alike. Gerald also currently wears the deputy mayor badge for Orange City.
